Newport Coast Preschool offers several after-school enrichment programs: Cooking, Phonics, Social Skills, Kindergarten Readiness, and Art.
... cooking classes for preschoolers ...
The Little Chef cooking classes are designed to enable very young children to cook as independently as possible under the gentle guidance of an adult. Cooking provides many tactile experiences, such as kneading and rolling out dough, tearing fresh lettuce leaves, and breaking eggs. All other senses are stimulated, too. There are the sounds and smells of cooking, and fingers to lick! Children always look forward to sampling the finished product; but what fascinates young children above all is performing those ordinary cooking tasks that we adults take for granted. It's a challenge for little ones to pour milk into a meauring cup, squeeze a lemon, mix batter, or flip a pancake. Managing these jobs gives them a great sense of accomplishment!
What do children learn from cooking?
... phonics classes for preschoolers ...
In this program, used by the Newport/Mesa School District, your child will develop the reading readiness skills required to make learning to read easy, successful and fun!
In Session A, students are introduced to the Alpha Friends. There is a character for each letter of the alphabet, along with a movement to assist in learning and remembering the letter's phonic sound.
In Session B, children use their knowledge of the letters, phonic sounds, and the Alpha Friends characters to begin blending letters and sounds, and sounding out short words.
…social skills classes for preschoolers…
The ability to interact effectively with others is critical for life success. However, social competency skills are often under developed in young children. While some children may be advanced in using language, they are often immature in self-regulation and taking the perspective of others.
During this class your child will learn to read the social cues of others, discover ways of appropriately expressing their own needs, try on different emotions and begin to feel the benefit of positive communication with others. Taught by a licensed school psychologist with a fun approach, this class provides common social situations to strengthen your child’s social skills.
The idea that preschoolers can have good social “graces” is a fairly new expectation. However, research indicates that children who obtain these skills are more liked in school and have more self confidence.
This class is designed as a year-long curriculum, separated into 4 eight-week sessions. Registration is $50, and tuition is $360 per session.
